Sunshine & Beach in Cuba
April 17, 2013
We got a $500 voucher for each person discount courtesy of Sunwing Vacations that expires by the end of the year. So, obviously being a financially-wise family, we would take advantage of this great bargain and escape from the cold weather here in Toronto. After, short-listing to several high rated resorts within our preferred time period, we finally landed on a destination and resort, the Memories Paraiso Azul Beach Resort in Cuba.
We took the Sunwing Airlines Champagne flight to Cuba for 3 days. Yup, you hear me, champagne flight! Woot! I have never taken a champagne flight before so I was pretty excited about it. I was also seated next to a decent looking caucasian guy who was travelling with his buddies to a bachelor party. All I could say is, it was a quite enjoyable on flight experience during those few hours.
The resort although with a five star rating, isn't really a five star. The rooms look clean but if you look closely, tiny ants are visible everywhere. They could even be on your pillow! The flush from the toilet didn't work one morning and there was no water another time. It doesn't take a high maintenance person to notice these things but I chose to not let these affect my holiday mood. On a brighter note, the resort has a very open and beautiful beach. Super clear turquoise water and a swim up bar (after all, this is Cuba)!
There is a small market place within the resort that have a la carte restaurants of different cuisines for you to choose from. In case you get sick of eating the same stuffs from their buffet every day, it is definitely a good idea to try one of those. However, they have a very old school system where you have to line up in the big lobby with everyone else to make reservations for the restaurant you wish to dine in. And just so you know, our experience wasn't a pleasant one. By the time, it was our turn, they told us their computer broke down and we need to come back another time to make the reservation. That was after a good hour of doing nothing. When we came back again, they told us the reservations are already all booked up and there are no more tables within the days that we are staying... so we ended up eating at the buffet for 3 days straight, 3 times a day.
Smart enough, my brother and I brought our own racquets with us so we could play some tennis and outdoor badminton (ha! if you know what I mean). Apparently not a lot of people there play tennis, so we had all the court space we want. Every day, the resort hosts activities, such as aerobics in the water, beach/water volleyball, live band and shows for you to take part in. I just wish the crowd was a lot younger, it would have been so much more fun for sure. All in all, it was still a good relaxation 3-day getaway for our family. I would consider visiting other parts of Cuba in the future because the sunshine and beach are just something I would totally miss.
